Rules & Gameplay

Learn how to play TuringDuel and prove your humanity.

The Premise

TuringDuel is a word association game where you compete against an AI opponent. The twist? An AI Judge decides whose word is more "human-like." Your goal is simple: prove you're more human than the machine.

Inspired by the classic Turing Test, this game flips the script. Instead of trying to tell humans and machines apart, you're trying to out-human an AI that's specifically designed to mimic human behavior.

How a Game Works

1. Start a New Game

Click "Start Game" from the home page. You'll be matched against a randomly selected AI opponent, and a separate AI Judge will evaluate each round.

2. Submit Your Word

Each round, you submit a single word that you think sounds "human." Simultaneously (and hidden from you), the AI opponent does the same. Neither of you can see what the other picked until after the round.

3. The Judge Decides

An AI Judge reviews both words (presented anonymously as "Word A" and "Word B") and decides which word seems more likely to have come from a human. The player whose word the Judge picks earns a point.

4. Repeat

The game continues for multiple rounds. Each word can only be used once per game. No repeat words are allowed from either player.

5. Win the Game

The game is best of 7 rounds. The first player to reach 4 points wins. If you win, congratulations, you've proven your humanity!

Special Cases

Ties

If you and the AI submit the exact same word in a round, it's a tie! No points are awarded, and an extra round is added to the game to ensure there's still a winner. Great minds think alike but please mind that one of those minds is artificial.

Word Rules

You must submit valid English words. This keeps the game fair and challenges you to be creative within the bounds of the English language.

Offensive words are prohibited. This includes racial slurs, sexual content, and other harmful language. If that's what humans need to win against machines, we've already lost.

What the AI Opponent Knows

Your AI opponent isn't playing blind. Here's what it has access to:

  • The rules of the game
  • All of its and your previous word choices from this game
  • The Judge's decisions and who got the point in previous rounds
  • But NOT your word choice from the current round
  • Also, NOT your username or any of your past games

The AI uses this context to try to outsmart you, so keep it on its toes by being unpredictable!

What the AI Judge Knows

The AI Judge is a separate model that evaluates each round. Here's what it sees:

  • Both submitted words (labeled anonymously as "Word A" and "Word B" in random order)
  • The full history of previous rounds, including which words were submitted and whether the Judge correctly identified the human
  • Its task: determine which word is more likely to have come from a human player

Crucially, the Judge does not know which word came from the human and which from the AI in the current round. It learns from its mistakes in previous rounds and adapts its detection strategy. It also tries to detect the human's patterns (and so does the opponent!). So don't be surprised if the Judge gets smarter as the game progresses!

Strategies for Winning

  • Be creative: Obvious associations are easy for AI to match. Think laterally.
  • Be "human": Cultural references, wordplay, and emotional connections can give you an edge.
  • Be unpredictable: The AI learns from your patterns. Mix up your strategy.
  • Context matters: The Judge considers the flow of the game, not just individual words.
  • Have fun: At the end of the day, it's about enjoying the creative challenge!

But to be honest: At the moment we don't really know what the best strategy is. So maybe you come up with your own?
